LOBNHL Fantasy Hockey League

Posted: September 3, 2014 by Wyatt Arndt in Uncategorized

Hey guys,

So Chris had a great idea for next season (regardless of what we do with our LOB GM Connected season). What would happen if we took our LOB rosters and plugged them into fantasy hockey??

So I’ve now set up a fantasy hockey league. Here is what you need to know:

– Yahoo has a maximum of 20 teams, so first come first serve. The 10 guys who didn’t make it, I’m sorry!

– It is a head to head match up. Each week you set your roster to go against another guys roster. You set your lineup for each day of the week, using your LOB roster.

– There is no draft in this league, I will be assigning players to the teams rosters.

– If a player is injured, you cannot pick another guy up. You live and die by your LOB team.

– This league is for LOB Main League guys only!

– Please sign up with LOB [Team Name] as your team name.

So, sign up here if you think this sounds fun to you:  !

LOBNHL NHL 15 Status

Posted: September 3, 2014 by Wyatt Arndt in Uncategorized

OK, so with NHL 15 for Xbox One being a shell of what it should be, the question has been whether or not to run a season of NHL 15 on the Xbox 360 while we wait for the actual complete game of NHL 15 when NHL 16 comes out. Assuming GM Connected Mode even makes it into that game (EA is already rumbling that not enough people play that mode to make it worth their time. *shakes head in disgust*)

So we had a couple of options, one was to run a season of 15 on the xbox 360. I asked people in the league if they would be willing to do that, and around 15 of you said “yes”, you would be. That would mean half the league is up for it.

The problems I foresee are as follows:

– NHL 14 was the worst of the bunch, and people had already gotten tired of that game. NHL 15 on the 360 only has commentary updates and roster updates, there are no other changes. It is basically EA cashing in on people without an Xbox One and offering up only the slightest of changes. I fear people will play NHL 15 for a bit, and grow tired of it just as quickly.

– I also fear drop off from the owners who have an Xbox 360 and Xbox One and have bought NHL 15 for the One. Not only will they not want to buy the same game twice, but let’s say they do, it’s SUPER hard to play NHL 15 on the XBox One with all the new physics and gameplay, then go back to the old gameplay of NHL 15 on the Xbox 360. Again, I fear this will cause a loss of interest in the league.

So I would lean towards freezing our rosters and picking up again in NHL 16, if EA allows it. Chris had a great idea in that we could run a fantasy hockey team based on our rosters for the hell of it, during the NHL season. That way we still get some fun out of our rosters and can see what happens when they play in the real NHL.

If there is a huge uproar of people who want to do a 360 Gm Connected NHL 15 league anyways, please let me know. Go to and type in your comments, and if we get more than 25 people, we will run a league.

All I ask is that you be honest about your thoughts on 15. Are you ok with a GM Connected League where many of the GMs might not have much interest in playing the games? Are you ok with paying for a game that is the same as last years? Do you think you would be able to maintain interest in the league for the majority of the time?

In the end, the brotherhood and friendships made are more important than the game, so I feel we are fine leaving it off for a year. But I also know it’s a ton more fun to have that brotherhood and be able to play games with them as well. So if you guys are up for it, we can do the 360 league, just make sure you go into knowing what it might end up being like.

If NHL 15 isn’t in our future, please note that Inder has started a Madden 15 league, many of us will be playing Destiny, and we will have fantasy hockey pools going on. We also have LOB Ups still happening, and we will always have things to do with your LOB brothers, so don’t view the end of a potential GM Connected year as the end of LOB. Worry not, we are always around.

That being said, if we get 25 guys to commit to NHL 15 on the 360, we will continue the league this year! So sign up here

And let me know!

LOB Lite League Settings

Posted: July 20, 2014 by Wyatt Arndt in Uncategorized

OK because EA hates puppies and happiness and wants us to never experience what it feels like to smile when playing a hockey game, we have zero access to league settings. The reason being, as we figured out last month, was because there are no league settings. The game just snakes settings from the host machine and uses those. I don’t think I need to describe why that is so fucking stupid on so many levels, so I will just leave it there and move on.

With that being said, for LOB Lite (and for NHL 15 if we have to use this same method), I want people all on the same page. It’s weird to be playing a slower game on your home machine, then all of a sudden you’re playing 1980’s, NHL 2004 style hockey when you’re on the road. It makes no sense to play like this.

So everyone in LOB Lite will be using the following settings moving forward. Also, seriously, let us all pray they have universal league settings in NHL 15. The focus of the new settings is more realistic, less arcadey hockey (which has been LOB’s MO since day one, so anyone who hates it or wants more arcadey hockey, sorry, that was never the intention of this league and never will be). Things you should notice with these settings:

– Gameplay is a lot slower

– Puck collisions are much higher (puck will bounce off of skates and sticks more, so it’s harder to dangle through three guys)

– Sniping is way harder. Gone are the days of 110 MPH wrist shots from your fourth line guy going top cheese. Even your stars will struggle to snip top corner while shooting cross body in the slot (which is the way it should be)

– Hopefully more fatigue and fewer injuries (assuming all of the settings get taken into account by the game)

– Lower scores. There most likely won’t be some dude with 190 points halfway through a season.

OK, so here are the new settings and how to apply them:

1.) Go to customize

2) Go to “Settings”

3) Go to Hospitality Settings

4) Set everything to hardcore and extreme

screen4 screen5

This sets all the base settings on your game to hardcore simulation.

Now, onto the tweaking:

5) Go into Gameplay Settings

6) Lower game speed, increase fatigue (match what you see here)

7) Lower injuries and  lessen acceleration (match screen)

8) Go to checking, lower hitting assistance

And that should be that. Before you play any games, check your settings to make sure they’re correct. I assume it will auto save your latest settings, but if it doesn’t, you might need to set them again. Worst case scenario, hopefully the person you’re playing has the right settings and they can do the invite.

If you play a game and notice the speed is way too fast and feels like the old settings you are in your rights to ask to send the invite so it uses the league settings. Please make sure we all use the same settings so we can all be on the same page!

Dave Wells

Twitter can be like high school, where certain cliques tweet all the time, and the Vancouver Canucks crowd certainly has a big clique feel to it, so rather than have people go “Why is @brown2bure angry at stanch??” I am just going to post this once and move on.

There will be some of you who don’t care, and I applaud that.

There will be some of you who do care, and for that I offer up this explanation (to which I will attempt to not make it a he said/he said, LET’S FUCKING MEET UP WITH SWORDS AT DAWN sort of thing.

For those who might not know, I run a video game hockey league for the Xbox, and Dave has been a part of that from day one. Over the years people leave, or people get fired, and it so happens Dave got fired today from it.

(Should you have any reason for wanting to know why, from my end of things, here you go )

Again, every story has its own side, so all I will say from my end of things it comes down to a rule was broken and I am tired of dealing with too much stress over a video game league. That’s it.

After this happened, Dave said our friendship was over and then started putting me on blast for being a fraud and what have you. How I’m fake nice. He then started sub tweeting and chirping Eddie Lack by accusing me of stalking Eddie, and I’m sure it will continue. I am pretty sure this blog post will be viewed as “fake” as well.

The only reason I want to post this is to a) let people know the background so they don’t have to ask me “Why does Dave hate you??” and b) because I’m confused and saddened by it all. I don’t know how I’m fake or whatnot, I always try to do my best to treat people online with respect. Am I perfect? Of course not. I know I struggle to make friends outside of twitter, but I always do my best to not make people feel bad online, or if someone yells at me or calls me out, I try and find a middle ground, because I simply don’t like arguing with people. It doesn’t do much for me.

So if I become the devil according to Dave, at least you know why. Feel free to make your own judgement about me, everyone has their own opinion, as that is how life works.

League Update

Posted: July 6, 2014 by Wyatt Arndt in Uncategorized

Hey guys,

Justen and myself try and run the league to our best abilities, I hope everyone knows that. In the role of commish we have to deal with arguments, we have to deal with conflicts, and many times emotions will get heated around the league (ourselves included) but we always try and do our best moving forward to improve with how we deal with things.

As we all know Dave (and I’ve told him this directly, so this is not some ambush) has made this league very difficult to run at times. He has been involved in a lot of high conflict incidents and there are many days when I just felt like folding the league rather than run it, because sometimes it just didn’t feel worth it. There would be times when I would be up talking all night dealing with situations instead of relaxing or getting sleep. I know Justen has done the same.

I did this for two reasons, one, for the love of the league, I really want to put out the best GM Connected league out there for the group of guys involved, I really do. It’s not just random cliche, I am honestly proud of our league and love it when guys get involved and bring more life to it. I could list off a ton of things you guys have done to make this more than a league, but that would take too long, just know I think this is the best NHL league around.

That brings me to the second reason. I also think of you guys as friends, and while I often get lost in my attempts to land a real full time writing job and don’t get to hang out or interact with you guys as much as I would like (I am trying to get better at balancing my times), I love the fact this league has allowed a lot of us to make friendships out of the game.

Sadly, this sometimes makes it hard to run the league as a straight up league. I find it extremely hard to extract punishment on people I view as friends, which is why I have been so extremely lenient whenever I can. I don’t want to come down on you guys if emotions run high because a) I understand video games make us rage (myself included) and b) it sucks to have to punish any of you guys.

However, I had one rule I put in place recently. One single rule.

Dave has again, threatened to leave the league. He has said he is done after this season.

So for that reason, Dave is no longer with the league. I had one rule. I asked one thing of you guys. And it wasn’t followed.

I asked for this rule to be in place because there has to be a certain amount of respect shown to the league. That last rule was put in place after Dave attacked the league. I was tired of the league being used as an emotional weapon, which is what it has been used for too many times for my liking.

This league should be fun. I can tell you that Justen and myself have not had enough fun running it too many times. We don’t get paid to run this league. We treat it like a job, yet we get nothing for it. Justen and myself will be up until 3am sometimes, dealing with conflict, or even delaying buttons pushes, trying our best to accommodate people. We do the best we can. So when the one rule I asked to be followed cannot even be followed, I have to act on it. I feel if I don’t act on this rule, it not only shows that I can’t stand up behind my own words, but it shows everyone they can do whatever they want. And I don’t think it was a hard to follow or mean spirited rule.

I hate doing this. This is a brotherhood and there is no joy in this for me. It sucks it came to this. But fuck guys, this league isn’t fun right now for me. It’s not fun for Justen. It’s either I stop this shit now, or I fold the league. I don’t get paid enough to deal with the headaches this league is causing me right now. I want it to be a fun place where we all go to get away from our problems, not a place where it feels like I am dealing with ex-girlfriend’s fighting with me.

Anyways, any complaints/thoughts can be sent to me. I just need this shit to stop and for this league to be fun again. Please, let’s just enjoy this league for what it is, a place for bros to be bros, and get angry over shitty goals going in. I am tired of actually stressing out about the health of the league at times. I sit at work and worry about it. That’s fucked up. I want to restore this league to a fun place, and this is how I’m going to try and do it.

Being in charge sucks sometimes.

State of Affairs for NHL 15

Posted: July 5, 2014 by Wyatt Arndt in Uncategorized

Half of you know me as the original commissioner of the LOBNHL league (from back in the ’13 days) and soon the rest of you will know me in the NHL 15 days. Assuming we actually get GM Connected mode, and assuming we get control of sliders or at the very least, can set sliders before the league starts, there will be some changes.

As it stands now, there is some debate over whether the host’s settings are used (which it could be likely knowing EA and Chris has done testing to show this), thus over riding what should be the league settings (to which I will be asking Rammer about, you can bet on that).

As a result, one game I can find myself playing a game where Marion Gaborik struggles to hit the net, while the next game Roman Polak is sniping top corner. Roman fucking Polak.

That being said, there are two things to note: One, I prefer a slower game speed, one that doesn’t have wrist shots cannoning off of players sticks, and I want games where it isn’t a snipe show with fourth fucking liners, which mean shot accuracy will be lower.

Basically I want to encourage real hockey, not a return to the not so glory days of NHL 2004, where players had rockets under their name, and Brandon Reid was a really hot commodity to have on your team.

So for the people who like the cracked out speed and the 1980’s scoring, I just want you to be aware that I am going to do anything in my power to avoid that. I’ve said since day one I like realistic hockey (as much as can be obtained in fake hockey) so I will do my best to achieve that.

What this means is if the host settings are used in 15, then we will all have to set our settings to the exact same settings, just to ensure the game doesn’t snag those instead. Which means I will have a league settings you will need to follow. The idea is that this will hopefully stop settings changing from one game to the next, because that’s just fucking weird. Also, if we can set league sliders before the season starts, I can also tell you the game speed and shot accuracy will be lowered out of the box (assuming EA has it super fast out of the box, which let’s face it, they always do).

Again, nothing will change for this last 14 season. It is unfair for me to come stomping in here making changes this late in a season where everyone has adapted to it, I just wanted to give you a heads up that changes for the next game will be forthcoming, to be more inline with the original vision I had for the league.

Complaints, as always, can be sent to me via all caps on twitter.

New LOBNHL Rules

Posted: April 8, 2014 by Wyatt Arndt in Uncategorized

There was some drama tonight after trades went downhill between the Flames and Canes, and as a result of that fallout, I just have some new rules in place.

1) If you threaten to quit the league, you’re out. You just get kicked out. It doesn’t matter if it’s me, or Justen or Dave or whomever, if you do that, it’s over, done.

2) LOBHeat is a fun hash tag we all use, and yes, tempers will get raised. We have all gotten mad over the years over stupid shit, we’ve all flipped our lids and then calmed down later. All I ask is that you apologize when all is said and done, or if you truly can’t bury the hatchet after a night, just don’t interact with that person moving forward. There is a difference between LOBHeat and Random Drama.

3) Don’t attack the league. While this may seem self serving, it is perhaps the only rule I truly enforce, and that’s because I will always protect the league at the end of the day. If people start bashing it and attacking it, then what’s the point of having it? If there are problems, that’s fine, but let’s work towards a positive outcome instead of being negative with no solutions being offered.

When I first started the league, I did everything I could to cater to people, to make sure people were happy. I viewed this as my job as commissioner to never get angry because I have seen many an organization fail because people in power abused it or would not take the role seriously and would make rash decisions. This is why our firing rate for LOBNHL is extremely low, I did everything I could to keep it that way.

In fact, the only time I knee jerked was when I fired Dickie and that was done purely because some GM’s wanted blood after Clarkey got booted. I use that as a lesson to think everything through and not react to people pressuring me. There have been plenty of times I have gotten really pissed off at people, or wanted to boot people, but I always made sure to calm myself down, because the easiest way to ruin the integrity of a league is to run it fueled by emotions. This is why I always calm myself down and think things through before I make decisions for LOB.

I also placated people because I felt if I didn’t put on the best league, nobody would want to be in it. After running it for a while, I realize that lots of you guys love the league just as much as I do, so I don’t have to make sure I hold your hands or that I keep everything running perfect 100% of the time by myself. People have stepped up and done an awesome job keeping LOBNHL going, and I truly appreciate that.

As a result of these revelations, I also realize how I need to navigate the stress I put on myself. This isn’t just LOB related, I have learned a hard lesson that in my entire life, I try to do too much and as a result, burn myself out, and make myself feel like trash for not living up to expectations of other people, real or perceived. I need to learn to apply myself in a better manner and make sure I come through on things I say I will instead of trying to do everything and failing at half of them. I basically need to be smarter about what I do, so that people I interact with can rely on me more.

That is why I am lowering the tolerance on firings, because at the end of the day, I need less stress in my life. One of things that stresses me out, is this league, and it stresses me out when people fight. It truly does. I don’t like it and I will always want it to stop and to get people to get along. I know not everyone will get along, but I do think I can at least do my best to keep people civil.

Now, this could easily just be my personality flaw. I was not raised in an environment that allowed me to understand how people can fight one day and be totally cool with it the next day. Things stick in my mind and they fester and they tend to make me over think, and it drives me crazy. So I am asking people to do their best and try and lower the LOB Heat to normal levels. Yell about the game, or a result, but try not to go too far with it. Do it because it’s easier on me and it helps me out, because I truly don’t understand nor know how to act when people flip the fuck out. I don’t know how serious a fight is, and it adds stress to my life to figure things out. I am still up at 1:45 trying to go over what happened tonight, that’s just how it goes for me, so all I can do is ask everyone to try their best to keep things at a normal level.

Finally, many might see this as an attack upon Dave in some sort of subtweet fashion. It truly is not, he just happened to be involved in an incident (one that has happened before with other GMs that had nothing to do with Dave) that made me realize I need to give the league the courtesy of letting them know my mindset, instead of me ranting and raving to myself. Nothing will get fixed unless I tell you guys what I would like to see happen.

So again, this isn’t against Dave at all. I am very direct and I already talked to Dave about this, but I realized when talking to him that it didn’t just apply to him, it applied to the league, and that I needed to tell you guys my thoughts, otherwise how will I ever get things to change?

We truly have an amazing league here, and I have made many friends in it, that is why I just wanted to let you know what was going on in my end, and if you see me act harsher than I have in the past, it’s not because I am trying to be a dick, it’s just that I am trying to lower stress levels of running a video game league.

I have no idea how to end this. Peace out? Yeah, peace out.
